âSometimes I wonder about you, Pippa,â Christopher told me.
I took my eyes off the spot where Crispin had disappeared and turned back to him. âWhat do you mean?â
He gestured to the house, and by extension, to his cousin. âYouâve known him more than half your life. Youâve known him as long as youâve known me. And you made a good case, last month, for why and how he might have killed Grandfather and Grimsby. I didnât really think he had, but it all made sense, at least. But this? How could you possibly think my cousin could have strangled a young woman who never did him any harm? Donât you know that he isnât like that?â
âOf course I know that,â I said, since I had come to the same conclusion myself earlier. âI just wanted to know what happened. And to rub his nose in it, I suppose. You know St George and I have never got along.â
âYou get along just fine in your own way,â Christopher said severely. âYou call it not getting along because all you do is bicker, but in truth, the two of you get on like a house on fire.â
âIs that supposed to be a good thing?â
He rolled his eyes, and looked disconcertingly like his cousin for a second. âYou enjoy the bickering. If he stopped twitting you, youâd miss it.â
âI would not,â I said, offended. âI would like nothing better than for St George to leave me alone. I canât believe youâre defending him, Christopher.â
âHe lost his mother and grandfather less than two weeks ago,â Christopher said. âToday he lost Johanna. And no, he maynât have been serious about her, but thatâs still a lot of death. Heâs not without feelings, you know. People think Iâm the sensitive oneâ¦â
Because he comes across as softer and more open and less abrasive than his cousin. I nodded.
ââbut Crispin developed that sharp tongue for a reason.â He slanted me a look. âI had Mum, Dad, Francis, Robert, and you. Who did he have?â
Heâd had Uncle Harold, who had never seemed to care much, and Aunt Charlotte, whoâd cared too much, and Christopher, until I took him away.
And heâd had me, always giving back as good as I got.
I grimaced. âYouâre saying I have to apologize again, arenât you?â
âNo,â Christopher said. âToo much of that, and itâll lose its effectiveness. Just try to be a little nicer to him, if you can. Donât go out of your way to be hurtful.â
âI donâtââ I began, and then I stopped with a sigh, because yes, sometimes I did do my best to hit where I knew, or hoped, it would sting. âIâll try.â
âThank you, Pippa.â
We sat in silence for a moment.
âI suppose we just forget all this, then,â I said, âand pretend weâre having a jolly holiday at the Dower House until we can leave?â
âI donât think we can,â Christopher answered. He eyed the house pensively. âSomeone in there is a murderer. It isnât you or me or Crispinâor Francis;
